Natural Pond Handbook

03 · Design & Depth Profiles

A natural pond is not a uniform bowl. It is a series of zones, each serving a different function for plants, creatures, and water quality.

Shape & shelves

  • Irregular edges look natural and create varied micro-habitats. Avoid perfect circles.
  • Build at least one graduated beach (gentle 1:10 slope) so wildlife can enter and exit, and so you can stand to maintain.
  • Shelves should be flat and level; a ledge that's too narrow will collapse under the liner weight.

Depth & climate

In colder climates the deep zone must stay below the frost line so fish and hardy plants survive under ice. As a rule of thumb:

deep_zone ≥ frost_depth + 20 cm e.g. frost to 50 cm → dig to 70–90 cm

Regeneration (plant) zone sizing

For natural balance, the planted filtration area should be a meaningful fraction of the total surface. A widely used guideline:

plant_zone_area ≈ 30–50% of total pond surface (wildlife/swim) or 1 m² of mature planting per 1–2 m² of open water for fish ponds
Design shortcut Lay out the pond with a hose or rope on the ground and live with it for a few days. View it from your favorite seat. Adjust the shape before a single scoop of soil moves.
Design like nature A natural pond has no uniform depth. Plan a shallow shelf (150–300 mm) around 60% of the perimeter for marginal plants, a mid-depth zone (450–600 mm) for oxygenators, and a deep zone (900–1200 mm) for fish refuge and winter ice cover.
Use cardboard to test shape Before digging, lay cardboard on the ground cut to your planned outline. Live with it for a week. If you trip over it, bump into it, or it looks wrong from your favourite window, redesign now — not after you’ve dug.
Measure twice, dig once Add 150 mm to every dimension for underlay overlap. Add 600 mm to each side of the liner for edging. These margins prevent the“it’s slightly too small” disaster.
