Water must move. Circulation delivers oxygen, drives filtration, and prevents dead zones where anaerobic sludge builds.
Choosing a pump
- Flow rate: For fish ponds, turn over the full volume every 1–2 hours through filtration. For wildlife ponds, a gentle turnover every 4–6 hours is plenty.
- Head height: Account for the vertical lift to a waterfall/stream plus friction in pipe. Always read the pump's performance curve, not just the headline number.
- Type: Direct-drive (powerful, uses more energy) vs magnetic/asynchronous (efficient, ideal for most ponds).

Plumbing basics
- Use flexible PVC or rigid pressure pipe; avoid kinks that strangle flow.
- Bury supply lines below frost line in cold climates.
- Size pipe generously — a wider pipe loses less pressure than a long thin one.
- Install a shut-off valve and a union for easy pump removal.
Waterfalls & streams
A waterfall is both beautiful and a powerful aerator. Build a level spillway (use a spirit level — an uneven lip looks awful) and line the stream with EPDM too. A 10 cm drop over a wide weir gives more aeration than a tall thin fall.
Energy note
Pumps run 24/7 for months. A 60 W efficient pump costs far less over a decade than a cheap 120 W one. Check watts, not just price.
Pump sizing procedure
- Calculate pond volume in litres (L × W × avg depth × 1000).
- Divide by 2 for turnover rate (full circulation every 2 hours).
- Add 10% for head height (every metre of lift reduces flow).
- Choose a pump rated at or above that number at your required head height.
Reduce running costs
A 200W pump running 24/7 costs £250–350/year. A variable-flow pump on a timer can cut that by 40%. Run pumps at full flow for 4–6 hours at dawn and dusk when oxygen demand peaks, and at reduced flow overnight.
Never run a pump dry
Pumps need water for cooling. If the water level drops below the intake, the impeller will seize within minutes. Always fit a low-water cut-off or check the level weekly.
