13 · Maintenance Routines
A balanced natural pond is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. A little rhythm keeps it thriving through the seasons.
Weekly (growing season)
- Skim fallen leaves and surface debris.
- Check pump flow and clear intakes.
- Deadhead spent lilies; thin aggressive floaters.
- Observe fish for lethargy or flashing (sign of stress).
Monthly
- Test water: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH (kits are cheap).
- Empty skimmer basket and rinse mechanical media.
- Top up evaporated water with dechlorinated water if needed.
Seasonal calendar
| Season | Tasks |
|---|---|
| Spring | Remove netting, divide plants, restart pump, partial debris vacuum, dose beneficial bacteria |
| Summer | Monitor algae, top up water, thin plants, watch fish heat stress |
| Autumn | Net against leaves, cut back marginals, stop feeding as temps drop |
| Winter | Keep a hole in ice (de-icer or gentle pump), don't break ice (shockwaves kill fish), reduce/stop filtration flow if frozen |
Winter ice
Never smash ice on a pond — the concussion can rupture fish swim bladders. Use a floating de-icer or an aerator to keep a small breathing hole open instead.
Weekly maintenance routine (10–15 minutes)
- Check water level — top up if more than 50 mm below normal.
- Inspect pump intake — clear any debris blocking the screen.
- Check fish — are they active? Any white spots, fin damage, or lethargy?
- Clean mechanical filter — rinse sponges in pond water (never tap water).
- Remove floating debris — leaves, petals, wind-blown litter.
- Top up dechlorinator if you topped up with tap water.
Monthly tasks
- Test water: ammonia, nitrite, pH, KH (hardness).
- Trim dead foliage from marginal plants.
- Check UVC bulb — replace annually (even if it still glows, output drops after 8–10 months).
- Inspect liner edges for exposure or animal damage.
Seasonal tasks
- Spring: Restart pumps, divide overgrown plants, begin feeding when water reaches 10°C.
- Summer: Monitor water level daily in heat, thin floating plants, watch for algae.
- Autumn: Net falling leaves daily, stop feeding below 10°C, clean filters thoroughly.
- Winter: Keep a hole in ice with a heater or floating object, reduce feeding to once weekly below 8°C.
