Shade, depth, and less surface area fight evaporation.

Heat and dryness stress a pond in opposite ways to cold: water vanishes, oxygen drops, and algae loves the warmth. Shade and circulation are your friends.

Evaporation & top-up

Warm ponds can lose several centimetres of water per week to evaporation. Keep a buffer and top up with dechlorinated water (see chapter 26). Auto-top-up valves paired with a dechlorinator are ideal for holiday periods.

Oxygen is the critical limit

Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water, yet fish metabolism and bacterial activity are higher. This is why summer fish kills happen on still, hot nights. Run circulation 24/7 and add a fountain or air stone during heatwaves.

Shade and cooling

  • Cover 40–60% of the surface with floating plants (lilies, lotus, waterlily pads) to cut light and heat.
  • Use a pergola, sail, or strategically planted tree on the low-sun side.
  • A shallow "cooling shelf" with moving water loses heat faster than a still deep basin.

Heat-driven algae

Green water and blanket weed peak in hot, still, nutrient-rich water. Combat with more plants, less feeding, and strong circulation rather than chemicals.

Tropical vs hardy choices

  • Tropical lilies, lotus, hyacinth (where legal): spectacular but must be lifted or replaced each cool season.
  • Fish: goldfish and koi tolerate warmth if oxygen is adequate; avoid overcrowding in heat.
  • Mosquitoes: still a non-issue if water moves — do not let a hot pond go stagnant.
Liner note Dark liners in full sun can heat shallow water dramatically. A gravel/cobble edge and planting pockets help insulate and cool the margins.
Heat survival checklist
  1. Provide at least 50% shade over the pond surface.
  2. Add an airstone or fountain for surface agitation.
  3. Top up daily with dechlorinated water — evaporation can exceed 25 mm/day.
  4. Do not clean filters during heatwaves (bacteria are stressed).
  5. Reduce feeding to every other day.
  6. Float a frozen water bottle if temperature exceeds 30°C (emergency only).
Oxygen crash risk Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen. A sudden thunderstorm after a heatwave can crash oxygen levels in minutes. Run aerators 24/7 during heatwaves.
