21 · Building a Bog Filter

A bog (regeneration) filter is the most effective natural filtration you can build: water is pushed down through gravel and plant roots, where bacteria and roots strip out nutrients.

How it works

  1. Pond water is pumped into the bottom of a gravel-filled bed.
  2. It rises slowly through the gravel and plant roots, which host massive bacterial colonies.
  3. Nutrients are consumed; clarified, oxygen-rich water overflows back to the pond at the top.

Sizing

bog_volume ≈ 10–30% of pond volume (bigger = clearer) For a 5000 L pond, aim for 500–1500 L of bog

Construction steps

  1. Excavate a shallow basin (30–45 cm deep) beside or within the pond, lined with EPDM and underlay.
  2. Add a perforated pipe (or a distribution grid) at the bottom to receive pumped water evenly.
  3. Fill with 2–4 cm rounded gravel (washed, no fines). Avoid limestone unless you want higher pH.
  4. Plant densely with marginal species whose roots will colonize the gravel (iris, rush, pickerelweed, carex).
  5. Pump pond water into the bottom pipe; let the bed overflow via a standpipe back to the pond.

Plumbing tips

  • Use a flow restrictor so water dwells in the gravel (slow = more contact time).
  • Include a clean-out: a way to backflush or drain the bog occasionally to remove trapped sludge.
  • Keep the pump strainer accessible for maintenance.
Result A correctly built bog filter often keeps water clear with no UV and no chemicals. It is the single upgrade that most transforms a struggling pond.

Build procedure
  1. Separate the bog from the main pond with a shared liner or a overflow pipe.
  2. Plumb the pump to push water to the top of the bog via a distribution pipe.
  3. Fill with washed gravel (20–40 mm) to 200 mm above the water level.
  4. Plant heavily — 1 marginal per 2,000 litres of bog volume.
  5. Water flows down through the gravel and returns to the pond via overflow.
Size the bog correctly The bog should be 10–15% of the total pond surface area. A 10 m² pond needs a 1–1.5 m² bog. Smaller bogs clog and become anaerobic.
