Native plants establish faster, support local wildlife, and are often illegal-to-harm or illegal-to-sell-invasives aware. Match plants to your region — and check local invasive-species laws before buying.
Why native (and legal) matters
- Native species are adapted to your climate and support local insects, frogs, and birds.
- Some popular pond plants are invasive and banned in parts of the US, EU, and Australia (e.g., water hyacinth, parrot's feather, floating pennywort). Never release them into the wild.

Before you buy
Confirm each species is legal to grow and sell in your state/province/country, and never relocate wild plants from protected waterways.
Planting notes
- Use aquatic baskets with heavy loam; top with gravel.
- Introduce natives gradually so they establish before aggressive growers take over.
- Local pond societies and native-plant nurseries are the best sources of region-correct stock.
Sourcing native plants
- Buy from specialist native plant nurseries, not garden centres (garden-centre plants may be cultivars, not true natives).
- Check labels for provenance — UK-sourced stock is best for UK gardens.
- Join local wildflower groups for swaps and advice.
- Never collect from the wild without landowner permission and a pollination licence.
