Herons, raccoons, cats, and otters love a convenient meal. You can deter them without harming them — and without resorting to lethal control.
Herons
Gray herons and similar wading birds are the classic koi thief. They need to stand at the water's edge to fish.
- Netting: a taut pond net (ideally raised on supports) is the most reliable barrier.
- Depth & shelves: make the edge deep and steep so a heron cannot wade in; fish retreat to the center.
- Hiding places: plant dense lilies and add clay pots/caves for fish to shelter.
- Decoys & movement: heron decoys (territorial) and scare-tape/reflective line can help, but birds learn — rotate tactics.
- Monofilament lines: criss-cross clear fishing line ~10–15 cm above the water; herons dislike the invisible barrier.
Raccoons, otters & mink
- These can reach over edges — a low electric fence (purpose-made, safe pulse) or netting deters them.
- Remove easy access: trim overhanging branches they use as bridges.
- Secure any fish in a dedicated deep refuge zone.
Cats & domestic animals
- Cats usually only take fry or weakened fish; dense planting reduces opportunity.
- Keep dogs away during breeding season so amphibians can use the pond safely.

Humane rule
Avoid lethal traps or poisons. A balanced, well-planted pond with refuges and a net keeps both your fish and the local ecosystem safe.
Deterrent procedure (layered defence)
- Deep zones (900+ mm) give fish escape routes from herons.
- Dense planting along edges provides cover.
- Overhead wire or line across the pond prevents herons landing.
- Motion-activated sprinkler is the most effective cat/heron deterrent.
- Floating cover (water lilies, rafts) gives fish a refuge from above.
Heron-proofing tips
- Heron decoys do not work — herons are not territorial about feeding spots.
- Reflective spinners work for 2–3 weeks until herons habituate.
- The most reliable method: a pond cover or net during unattended periods.
- Herons are protected by law in many countries — you cannot harm them.
