Ponds and electricity are a dangerous mix done wrong — and freezing can wreck pumps. Do this part properly.
Always use GFCI / RCD protection
Every outdoor pond circuit must be protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) (called an RCD in some regions). It cuts power in milliseconds if current leaks to water or a person. Test it monthly.
Wiring and burial
- Use outdoor-rated, UV-stable cable sized for the pump's load plus headroom.
- Bury supply cable below the local frost/mechanical-protection depth, or run in conduit.
- Use weatherproof junctions raised above likely splash; never splice inside the pond.
- For anything beyond a simple outdoor socket, hire a licensed electrician.
Pump freeze protection
- In freezing climates, either remove the pump for winter or keep it running below the ice (moving water resists freezing).
- Never let a pump run dry or freeze solid — ice expansion cracks housings.
- Submersible pumps in deeper water are naturally protected by the thermal mass below ice.
Frost-free siting
- Place controllers, transformers, and timers in a weatherproof, frost-free housing.
- Keep plugs off the ground and out of the spill zone of waterfalls.
Non-negotiable
No pond pump, light, or filter should ever plug into a standard indoor outlet without GFCI. If in doubt, stop and call an electrician. Water + 240/120 V is lethal.
Maintenance safety
- Switch off and isolate power before cleaning pumps or reaching into the water near equipment.
- Label the pond circuit at the breaker.
Electrical safety procedure
- All outdoor pond circuits must be protected by a 30 mA RCD (residual current device).
- Use IP67-rated connectors for all underwater connections.
- Bury cable in armoured conduit if it crosses a path.
- Keep all junction boxes above water level and accessible.
- Test the RCD monthly by pressing the test button.
- Switch off at the consumer unit before any maintenance.
Water and electricity kill
Never use indoor-rated extension leads near a pond. Never touch electrical equipment with wet hands. If in doubt, hire a qualified electrician.
